International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated each year on 8 March and honours the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. It also commemorates women’s fight for gender equality and is a day for reflection, awareness raising, and encouraging action for positive change.
We celebrate IWD at Anglicare WA because more than 70% of the people who use our services are women and more than 80% of the people who deliver them are also women. It is a sad fact that poverty and inequality are experienced by many more women than men.
IWD originated in the universal female suffrage movement and labor movements of Europe and North America during the early 20th century. While much has improved for women since then, many issues still impact women’s advancement, and more work remains to ensure a gender-equitable and inclusive world.
This year’s theme for IWD in Australia is ‘March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls’. It is a call to action for all of us to address the barriers that prevent women and girls from reaching their full potential, and to empower the next generation of women and girls as catalysts for change.
Anglicare WA was proud to mark the day, with staff hosting or attending several events across the state to celebrate women and girls and advocate for rights and full participation in economic, political, and social life.
And while cost of living and housing have dominated the political landscape in the lead up to both the state and federal elections, it is important to ensure that the rights and safety of women and girls remain on the political agenda.
That is why Anglicare WA will continue to call on State and Federal governments to ensure freedom from domestic violence and abuse.
