In the lead up to the WA State Election, Anglicare WA is advocating for ‘A Fair Life’ through the following four election priorities to encourage ‘A Better WA’ for all:
Affordable cost of living
Housing
Freedom from domestic violence and abuse
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recognition and justice
In the final campaign week of the State election, we share a rundown of our media advocacy in alignment with our advocacy priorities ‘Affordable cost of living’, ‘Housing’ and ‘Freedom from domestic violence and abuse’.
Advocating for affordable cost of living and housing
2 March – Anglicare WA CEO Mark Glasson appeared in The Sunday Times and The West Australian calling for whoever forms the next government to hit the ground running to address the cost of living and housing crises. He also asked that when people cast their vote, they think not only about what they and their family need from the next government but consider the needs of their neighbours and those who aren’t doing so well.
5 March – Mr. Glasson appeared on ABC Radio Perth’s Mornings with Nadia Mitsopoulos where he was part of a panel with WACOSS and Shelter WA CEOs discussing housing and cost of living. He advocated for crisis intervention through Rent Relief, the need for targeted concessions, and a Housing Future Fund to continue the pipeline of social and affordable housing well into the future.
5 March – Mr. Glasson appeared in Business News calling on government to increase the scale and pace of their response to the cost of living and housing crises. With regards to cost of living, he would like government to raise the rate of Jobseeker and other income support payments to at least $82 per day, reduce barriers to employment, and invest in entry-level job creation. With regards to housing, he would like government to adopt a long-term vision and commitment to more social and affordable housing.
Advocating for housing
25 February – Anglicare WA Director of Services Philippa Boldy appeared on ABC Great Southern speaking about the impact of the rental crisis on households, which often sacrifice other expenses such as groceries, fuel, or children’s expenses to cover the rising cost of rent.
Advocating for freedom from domestic violence and abuse
26 February – Anglicare WA Director of Services Philippa Boldy appeared on the ABC News to speak about the importance and impact of FDV programs like our innovative Young Hearts program that focus on children and young people, and the opportunity to expand that in WA.
6 March – With the State election falling on the same day as International Women’s Day, Sara Kane, General Manager of Advocacy & Strategy, and Marsha Reid, Senior Advocacy & Community Engagement Officer discussed how we all have a role to play in addressing FDV and moving our state and country forward for women.
