Anglicare WA will close its Op Shops business by 30 June 2023 after 40 years’ service to the Perth community.

Anglicare WA will close its Op Shops business by 30 June 2023 after 40 years’ service to the Perth community.

The announcement follows a recent review of the retail business, which found it was no longer financially viable for Anglicare WA to operate the shops at Belmont, Fremantle, Maddington and Morley, and a consignment store at Claremont, without a significant investment of funds and resources to sustain the business.

Anglicare WA CEO Mark Glasson, who personally told staff and volunteers, said it wasn’t an easy decision and will signal the end of an era for the organisation.

Mr Glasson said, “Our Op Shops have been an enduring part of our organisation – almost since Anglicare WA first opened its doors - however, the review revealed we would need to divert funds away from our frontline services to ensure our Op Shops’ success.

“This is a particularly difficult decision that will impact some staff, volunteers, and partners - and we are committed to making it as smooth as possible.”

That process is well underway, with Good Sammy to take over management of the Maddington and Morley stories, ensuring continued service and support to the local communities.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Good Sammy to ensure a smooth transition for customers, staff and volunteers”, Mr Glasson said.

Good Sammy CEO Kane Blackman said, “We are pleased to bring these stores under our management and into the stable of Good Sammy’s more than 20 Op Shops. This will ensure continuity of service for the loyal customers in those areas, and ongoing employment and community service opportunities for the staff and volunteers.

“This makes a lot of sense for us, and we see this as an exciting opportunity to further grow our mission and ensure a thriving circular economy in WA that avoids items going to landfill.”

Mr Glasson thanked Anglicare WA’s Op-Shop staff, volunteers and managers who have worked tirelessly, especially in difficult conditions since Covid-19, to support their local communities.

“We value our people at Anglicare WA, and every staff member impacted will be offered a range of options including alternative employment opportunities, where possible. Their wellbeing and support are the utmost priority.”

The Op Shops will transition from Anglicare WA’s management over coming months, with negotiations continuing to secure a new operator for the Fremantle and Belmont stores.
