Western Australia’s former Agent General to the UK and Europe, John Atkins has been announced as the next Chairman of Anglicare WA.

Mr Atkins will replace current Chair, John Barrington, when he steps down next month at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting, after serving more than ten years on the Anglicare WA board.

Mr Barrington said Mr Atkins has the highly sought-after experience and expertise to ensure the continued strategic growth and evolution of Anglicare WA.

“Anglicare WA is the envy of the corporate and community sectors in WA for securing Mr Atkins to lead the Board on his return to Perth from London,” said Mr Barrington.

“With an extensive career in law and commerce, spanning more than 40 years, Mr Atkins is well-respected and highly-regarded across the political, community and corporate sectors, which will prove invaluable for one of WA’s leading community service providers.”

Mr Barrington said Mr Atkins was a strategic selection by the Board.

“He will provide adept and stable leadership for the Board as the organisation transitions to a new CEO next year, with Ian Carter to step down at the end of June after nearly 25 years at the helm.

“Mr Atkins has significant experience as a non-executive director, including a five year tenure as Chair of Lotterywest, nine years as Deputy Chair of Committee for Perth and a decade on the CCIWA Board, with a period serving as Chair.”

Mr Atkins said it was an exciting time to join Anglicare WA, as it moves into a new era.

“It is important to me that I make a contribution to society beyond my working and family life and I am looking forward to resuming my long-term involvement in the community sector,” said Mr Atkins.

He added he has big shoes to fill in succeeding Mr Barrington as Chairperson.

“John Barrington has successfully lead Anglicare WA over a significant period of change and a doubling of the organisation’s revenue.

“It is crucial during this period of leadership transition that the Board seamlessly continues to support and enable the organisation’s Executive to maintain momentum, without any disruption of service delivery to the 34,000 clients Anglicare WA supports.”
